Kushal vs Oleg in the Charlton ladder final (they drew!)

Kushal Jakhria (age 7) and Oleg Verbytski (age 8) are star graduates of Charlton's junior chess class.

The European Schools championships took place in Rhodes, Greece in April 2022.  The World Cadets Rapid and Blitz championships were held there immediately after.

Kushal took part in both events, Oleg joined him for the World Cadets.

Kushal won Gold in the European Schools Under 7 Open championship!
and Bronze in the World Cadets Under 8 Rapid championship!
and Gold in the World Cadets Under 8 Blitz championship!
Oleg won Bronze in the World Cadets Under 10 Blitz championship!

The junior chess coaching class restarted at Mycenae House on Monday 6th September 2021, 6:30pm to 7:30pm.

The first part of the class is some instruction and the rest is playing games.  It costs £5 per session, there is no need to book in advance or come every week.

It is aimed at children relatively new to chess, most are primary-school age with a few at secondary school.  The objective is for them to enjoy playing chess and improve to a proficient level.

Charlton Juniors entered the Junior 4NCL online league in January 2021 and like all new teams we had to start at the bottom.
There were 74 teams in division 5, including many secondary school teams, only 8 get promoted.

Our team finished in 4th place, winning five matches, drawing one and losing one, gaining promotion to division 4.  The next season starts in August.

The Charlton players were Kushal Jakhria, Mateusz Bazan, Oleg Verbytski, Alex Gao, Alex Williams and Isaac Thompson.

Kushal Jakhria (centre) of Charlton triumphed in the 2020 London Under 8 championship, held online this year on Saturday 5th December.  Also in contention for the top places were Oleg Verbytski and Isaac Thompson.

Charlton Juniors convincingly won an online team battle against five other junior clubs on Sunday 6th December 2020.  We also had the two highest individual scores.

Junior chess classes at Mycenae House are suspended whilst London is in Tier 3/4.

We started junior chess classes at Mycenae House in April 2018 following the suggestion of a parent, as many primary schools do not have a chess club.  The sessions are aimed at children relatively new to chess and have been well attended.

Chess classes are on Mondays 6:30pm to 7:30pm in term time.  They last one hour, about 30 minutes instruction followed by 30 minutes playing chess.

The cost is £5 per child per session.

During school holidays the children are welcome to come to our normal Monday club nights, which start at 7:00pm.  These are free of charge.

Our last session before Christmas is Monday 16th December 2019.  The junior chess class restarts on Monday 6th January 2020.
